CLEOBURY Mortimer Golf Club’s class act Emily Price pulled off another major triumph when winning the English Women’s Stroke Play Championship.

The 16-year-old produced a terrific last round at the Bristol and Clifton Club to finish on seven under par for the championship, which was two ahead of her closest challenger and namesake Georgia Price from Cornwall.

Emily becomes the second youngest winner of the title following British star Charley Hull, who won the title when she was 15, five years ago.

It crowns a fantastic year for Emily who won two prestigious scratch events and then the Scottish Girls Open earlier in the season before having to take an enforced break to concentrate on her GCSEs.

Emily said: “It’s just unbelievable and the win means so much, especially as this is almost my last event of the season. It was tough coming back after the break, but I’ve worked really hard these last few weeks and everything has come into place.”

Emily made a steady start in the Stroke Play Championships with an opening-round one-over-par 74 and then followed up with an excellent six-under 67 to move into contention for the title.

In the final round, Emily’s rivals fell away, including 2015 English girls champion Emily Toy from Carlyon Bay who was previously holding second place.

Emily held her nerve and completed the final round in a one-under 72 to clinch the title and now waits to see whether she obtains selection for the World Championships which take place in Canada at the end of September.

Proud dad Kelvin said: “It was a huge victory for Emily as she beat a mighty field which included Curtis Cup players and a member of the English women’s team”.

Emily now embarks on a new chapter when she attends Millfield School Sixth Form, but Kelvin added: “She will continue to play at Cleobury Mortimer.”
