WYRE Forest Swimming Club ran its ever popular Schools’ Gala last Saturday at Stourport Leisure Centre as students battled it out.

This was the last ever gala to be held at the venue as the club will be moving to its new home at Silverwoods next month and there was plenty of racing action to enjoy.

This year teams from Franche, Hagley, Hartlebury, St Anne’s, St Catherine’s, Lickhill, St Bartholomew’s Primary, Holy Trinity, Far Forest, St John’s and Chaddesley Corbett primary schools all took part.

The schools were randomly split into three galas and over the space of three hours, with more than 200 swimmers taking part in 25-metre individual races and 4x25m relays.

The competition was ran in two age groups, with Years 3 and 4 grouped together and Years 5 and 6 paired up.

The overall winner of the Year 5 and 6 category across all three galas will go on to represent Wyre Forest at the Worcestershire County School Games in July.

The first gala was won by Hagley, while the second was clinched by pupils from Bewdley and Holy Trinity took the third event.

The overall title in Years 5 and 6 was sealed by Holy Trinity, who will go on to represent the district next month.

Medals and trophies were awarded to swimmers by Carolyn Goddard, of the Wyre Forest Schools Sports Partnership, club head coach Lucy Walters and captains Emma Elwell and Matthew Newey.

Walters said: “We’d like to thank all our officials and volunteers, all the swimmers that helped out on the night, the staff at Stourport Leisure Centre and special mention to Lifeguards Emily Holford and Jess Lewis for keeping the children safe.”
