A SUPERB all-round display from Brett D’Oliveira led Worcestershire Rapids to a five-wicket win against rivals Birmingham Bears in tonight's NatWest T20 Blast derby.

Daryl Mitchell’s men avenged two defeats to Bears in last season’s competition and carried off the inaugural Norman Gifford Trophy in front of 13,107 fans at Edgbaston.

Despite 66 from Bears skipper Ian Bell, fine spells from Ed Barnard (1-14 from four overs) and man-of-the-match D’Oliveira (1-17 from four) restricted the hosts to 155-7.

D’Oliveira (62 not out from 38 balls) and Alexei Kervezee (40 from 29 balls) then helped Rapids to a stunning North Group derby triumph.

D’Oliveira reached his half-century from 30 balls and completed Rapids’ victory with a six with five balls remaining.

Sam Hain and Bell gave Bears a flying start, hitting 13 runs from the opening over from Matt Henry.

Bears raced to 46-0 from just five overs before Rapids started to hit back. Jack Shantry bowled Hain for 24 in the sixth over with the total at 58. Spinner D’Oliveira applied the brakes, conceding just two from his first over.

Kervezee’s catch removed William Porterfield (12) off Barnard in the ninth over. At the half-way point Bears had reached 75-2 after losing their early momentum.

D’Oliveira trapped Laurie Evans lbw for two to reduce Bears to 83-3.

Bell brought up his half-century from 50 balls, containing a six and four fours, as the Bears progressed to 105-3 from 16 overs.

Bell scooped a six off Joe Leach before he was caught by D’Oliveira with the total at 121.

Luke Ronchi clubbed Shantry for a six and a four in successive deliveries in the 18th over. However, Worcestershire claimed the scalp of Ronchi for 21, caught by Kervezee off Leach, who finished with 2-39.

Mark Adair (2) was run out in the last over from Henry and Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught Ateeq Javid (8) as the Kiwi finished with 1-36.

When Rapids replied, Kohler- Cadmore was out for eight and Joe Clarke (6) was caught by Evans off Recordo Gordon.

But Kervezee and Mitchell (15) repaired the damage until the skipper was removed by Boyd Rankin at 45. Rapids progressed to 75-3 from 10 overs but D’Oliveira and Kervezee raised the run-rate until the Dutchman was bowled by Javid for 40. Ross Whiteley (23) joined the outstanding D’Oliveira and took Rapids to the brink of victory with a fifth-wicket stand of 57.

Whiteley was dismissed with the scores level but perhaps rather fittingly D’Oliveira hammered the winning blow in the last over.
