GOOD things certainly came in threes for Jason Thompson as he bagged a trio of titles at Kidderminster Table Tennis League’s finals night.

The Bromley A player kicked off the Aggborough showcase in fine style by defeating team-mate Steve Horton in the veterans singles final without dropping a game.

He was able to get off to another flying start but Horton levelled the scores.

But Thompson kept a cool head to take the next two games and triumph 3-1 for his first ever Kidderminster Open Singles title.

The finalists teamed up to take the Open Doubles title, defeating the Harriers A pairing of Chris Hewitt and Mark Fiddian 3-1.

In the hard bat final, England number 12 Adam Nutland overcame a tough fight from George Carroll to take the title.

Carroll had to be content with the junior singles title, while the Balmoral Award for promising youngsters went to Aaron Willetts.

The Super Veterans final was a lively affair between two Harriers D players with Steve Dorrell going 1-0 up against Chris Maiden in a tense game that extended to 21-19. Maiden then showed the greater consistency to win 3-1.

The handicap singles saw Russell Pallett squeak home by three points against teenager Ryan Cooksey, while veteran Eric Calver had too much for young Sam Albrow in the final of the restricted singles.

Bromley A were crowned Division One champions after an undefeated campaign while Droitwich Legion Inn took the Division Two title.

Steve Horton took the award for most wins in division one, with Wordsley B’s Dave Whittingslow taking the division two equivalent.

The guest of honour on Monday evening was former league president Eileen Tasker who has been involved with Kidderminster’s table tennis league for nearly 60 years now.

And there was a special moment for Bewdley Institute stalwart Ted Dalton when he was presented with the Gary Jones Memorial Award at the ripe old age of 87.
