THE busiest winter competition of the season took place at the weekend at Cleobury Mortimer with over 50 playing in the Double Roll Up.

Conditions on Saturday were slightly tougher with Dave Smith, Rich Smith, Gordon Moriaty and Steve Scrace all scoring 38 points.

With a superior back count, Scrace lead the way going into the Sunday.

Division Two Winter Order of Merit leader, Colin Hopewell, once again continued his fine form with 38 to finish fifth and pick up precious points.

Wayne Poulton and Dave Slater had a superior back count to finish third and second.

But the weekend belonged to John Westley who shot a very impressive 40 points. Westley even had a slight wobble with two no score holes on the back nine.

However, his level-headed playing partner Paul Liggins helped him keep it together.

“I have been playing some good golf this year and getting an individual win is a great feeling, I held some good putts at the right time to keep the round together,” said the winner.

Cleobury coach Sam Pain said: “John has been very steady all year with some great team wins. He is a very good player off his handicap and I am sure it will be the first of many.

“I am also delighted for Dave Slater who has been having lessons with me over the winter. We have been working really hard on his driving accuracy, finding fairways and it certainly paid off for Dave today.”
