BEWDLEY Festival 2010 got off to a great start on Friday night at The Ramada with a trip down memory lane with Georgie Fame, entertaining us with a mix of jazz and rhythm and blues.

He’s older (67), greyer, but he can still draw the crowds and unsurprisingly he hasn’t stopped working since he was discovered at the tender age of 19.

Originally Clive Powell– he was renamed by impressario Larry Parnes – Georgie Fame has collaborated with many famous musicians over the years. These include Billy Fury, with The Blue Flames, Alan Price, Bill Wyman and Van Morrison.

On Friday he was Georgie Fame & Sons, although only one son was able to join him, and engaged us with anecdotes of many of the people he has known and worked with during his lengthy career, interspersed with his immediately recognisable hits YehYeh, The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde and Getaway, which he originally wrote for a TV commercial for a petrol company.

His performance was a chronological history of his career, told with gentle humour and good music.

Georgie appeared on stage with son Tristan Powell on guitar – a great start to this year’s festival.

Still lots of goodies on offer at this week’s Festival; Johnnie Walker, Alexei Sale, Elkie Brooks. See www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk for details.
