MORE than 15 people had their heads shaved at a Bewdley pub to raise £4,000 for the Millbrook Appeal.

The sponsored event was organised by Nikki Usowicz, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in July.

The 16 people queueing up to lose their locks at The Talbot included Ms Usowicz’s father, Andy.

“Dad had thick hair and a beard before they were let loose on him,” she explained, “There isn’t a hair on his head now.”

They were “ecstatic” with the turnout and the day as a whole, which went well “beyond all expectations”, she said.

Ms Usowicz got the idea for the fund-raiser when she lost her hair after receiving chemotherapy over recent weeks.

She explained: “I thought it would be a good way of raising some money to get some other people to lose their hair too.”

Her family are keeping her going through her treatment and inspired her to support the appeal.

“It was extremely difficult when I found out I had cancer,” the 37-year-old said, “I have two daughters and at my age it’s the news you never want to hear.

“You always hear about other people having cancer, so it was total shock when I was diagnosed but you just have to get on with it.

“You have be positive and get through the end of it, which I’m looking forward to. I have bad days and good days. It takes it out of you.

“It’s very hard on your family too. It affects so many other people than yourself.”

She also wanted to do something for the Millbrook Suite for helping her through her cancer treatment.

“I’m going through breast cancer and the Millbrook Suite needs money for refurbishment so I thought, why not?

“They’ve been fantastic in helping me deal with my cancer treatment. Every consultant I’ve seen and all the nurses at Millbrook do such a fantastic job which is brilliant.”
