Bewdley Festival, delightfully opened by Dr Richard Taylor MP got off to an explosive start with a concert at the Ramada Hotel on Friday 9th October. Paul Jones and Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen thrilled a packed house with their swinging repertoire.
The mainly silver haired audience relived their 60's youth with Paul's amazing singing and, with his pockets bristling with mouth organs, he wowed the crowds with some of their old favourites. A true professional, he took us back to an earlier era with his tales and reminiscences.
Digby and his professional session musicians were on rip-roaring form. To hear such a tight rhythm section was a joy and the sympathetic trombone playing of Chris Gower gave a platform to Digby's exciting trumpet playing. No one will forget their rendering of "I'll be Seeing You," in memory of the late, great drummer, Alan Ganley, with soloist, Julian Stringle, bringing a tear to the eye with his soulful clarinet playing.
The evening came to an end with Paul leading the audience in his signature song, "Doo wa diddy diddy," and didn't we sing! This was followed by a rousing gospel number reminding us of his Christian background. How lucky are we to find music of this quality on our doorsteps?
