THE Wyre Forest has closed today due to high winds, with police called to the scene over safety concerns.

The car park and visitors centre on the 456 Long Bank is closed today (Sunday January 21) as storm Isha hits the region.

The Met Office says wind speeds of 50 to 60mph are expected with a risk the speeds could get up to 80mph - which poses a risk to life.

Police have been called to deal with safety issues as cars which can't get onto the car park are parking on the busy road.

Forestry England said on its website: "Wyre Forest is closed today due to high winds.

"There will be a delayed opening tomorrow Monday 22 January while staff carry out site safety checks."

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said officers are at the scene as calls had been received from members of the public concerned about parking on the road next to the closed car park.

There was a yellow weather warning for wind across Worcestershire today but in the Met Office has now upgraded it to the higher amber warning.

The Met Office says: "Storm Isha will bring a spell of very strong winds during Sunday evening and into Monday.

"Disruption to travel and utilities is likely.

"There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

"Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.

"Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected."
