A SUPERMARKET cashier’s campaign to raise money for equipment to treat men with prostate cancer has been boosted by Kidderminster shoppers.

A bag pack was held at Morrisons in Kidderminster on June 24 and 25 which helped raise £860 for the Rory the Robot Appeal, which will see surgical equipment to treat prostate cancer installed at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

The campaign has been organised by Bromsgrove Morrisons employee Brian Wilkes, who is touring the company’s stores in Worcestershire to raise awareness and collect money for the appeal.

And the 76-year-old, who himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year, said this leg of the tour had seen the appeal pass the £30,000 mark and is now less than £10,000 off his target.

He was joined by Paul Rajjayabun, consultant urologist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, retired clinical nurse and founder of the Kidderminster and Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Support Group, group treasurer Paul Markhall and Morrisons Kidderminster general manager Zoe Phillips.

Mr Wilkes said: “It was a very successful event and I want to thank everyone who came along and supported us enormously.

“We were only able to complete one and a half days at Kidderminster but we’ve been kindly invited back for another day of fund-raising later in the year.

“With the money raised so far from the six stores and the £25,000 grant from Morrisons means we now have £30,440 – we have a target of £40,000.

“This is a cause very close to my heart so I am delighted with the backing this campaign has had.”

Other stores to be visited will be Droitwich, Ross-on-Wye, Malvern, Evesham, Rubery, Redditch and Bromsgrove.
