A PAIR of high-tech glasses is providing a 21st century solution for Wyre Forest residents suffering from balance problems.

The £10,000 state-of-the-art equipment has been provided for Kidderminster Hospital’s audiology department by the League of Friends.

The device – which incorporates a mini video camera and is the only one of its kind in Worcestershire - makes a rapid diagnosis which enables patients to see a consultant and then have the test and treatment all on the same day instead of having to make multiple appointments.

Medics say it is also more user-friendly as it is less invasive than traditional tests which can be uncomfortable for patients.

The equipment works by assessing eye responses to head movement and is the only test that can assess all six semi-circular canals of the ear to determine why patients may be having problems with balance.

Senior clinical audiologist Edward Southan said: “It can be used on patients who previously could not have balance testing done due to certain middle ear problems and so it has widened our audience.

“And it also means happier patients who do not get sick while they are having their tests”

He added: “The League of Friends are certainly friends of the audiology department, having helped us out on several occasions in recent years.

“We say a huge thank-you to them for enabling us to acquire this equipment.”

The League of Friends was formed more than 50 years ago to support patients at Kidderminster Hospital and the charity has donated more than £1 million in that time.

It raises funds through a café at the hospital, charity shops in Kidderminster and Stourport, and via donations from well-wishers.
