MAKING sure their school is making the most of the environment while also helping it flourish, the pupils at St George's CE Primary School took part in the Big Local Environment Challenge.

Not long after starting the new school year, the year six pupils took part in the Environment Challenge, organised by The Big Local DY10 Partnership at The Harriers Suite at Aggborough.

The children were given the task to think of a sustainable project that would make a positive impact by improving the environment in the locality of the school.

Calling themselves the Dragons, the children took on the roles of designers, marketers and researchers to come up with an idea, which they then presented to the judges and other participating schools.

The St George’s idea was to help animals in the locality, by sourcing recyclable materials, the plan was to build bird houses, insect and hedgehog homes.

They also thought of how to launch their project with the proposal to have a Fun Day in the local park.

The children were awarded £250 as the winning prize in the challenge, which assistant headteacher and class teacher Louise Low said they are looking forward to using in the future to carry out their ideas.

She said: "We are immensely proud of the children's efforts. The challenge has helped to build their confidence and presentation skills, as well as giving them the opportunity to come up with an original and exciting idea which will benefit both the environment and the local community."

Josh King, one of the pupils involved in the project said: "We got to work as a team and we put all our ideas in. It was a really fun day."
