SEVERN Valley Railway Holdings Plc board of directors has today announced that four vice presidents will be joining the five currently in post in its Golden Jubilee Year.

Along with a whole host of events and activities in progress to mark the special year since a group of young enthusiasts started a campaign to reopen the line after its closure in 1963; the board has nominated four new vice presidents who have played a significant part in SVR’s history.

Firstly, David Owen OBE, a long standing director of the Holdings Board joins the team. Since joining the board in 1984, he also chaired the Plc from 1989 to 1993 and his family business supported the complete refurbishment of bridges to ensure the reopening of the railway.

Secondly, Phil Swallow, a long-time supporter of the SVR, whose work behind the scenes has proved incredibly important to the railway. Phil’s support during the flood damage repair of 2007 was invaluable and his business knowledge and contacts have proved extremely helpful.

Thirdly, David Williams was involved in the early days of the railway, joining the Severn Valley Railway Society in 1966. David is editor of the Severn Valley Railway News, a position he has held for more than 48 years. He provides invaluable knowledge on the history of the SVR and rolling stock.

Finally, Mick York joined the railway in 1966. While working on the footplate, Mick put himself forward as holdings director and was elected chairman in 1993 and 1999, holding this position for more than 15 years in total. Mick continues as director, has been chief organiser of the 2015 celebrations and successfully co-ordinated royal visits to the railway, which will include HRH Princess Royal’s visit on Monday, April 13.

The new recruits join existing vice presidents, the Earl of Lindsay, John Cameroon, David Hallam, Sir Peter Luff MP and David Morgan.

Nick Ralls, SVR general manager, said: “We are delighted to formally recognise the long-standing and unstinting support for the Railway demonstrated by all four gentlemen in appointing them as vice presidents in this most special year for us.”
